Materialism is an epistemological or ontological position that maps all processes and phenomena of the world to matter and its laws and relationships. In answer to the question "What is there?", Materialism answers: "Only matter". Materialism therefore assumes that thoughts, feelings or consciousness are phenomena of matter or can be traced back to them. He explains the world surrounding the human being and the processes running in it without spiritual or immaterial elements such as God or the soul. In contemporary philosophy, the term "physicalism" is often used in the same sense as "materialism". Oppositions are the idealism, for which only consciousness contents are really real, and the dualism, for which the physical and the psychical represent two strictly separate, independently existent realms of being. Der Materialismus ist eine erkenntnistheoretische oder ontologische Position, die alle Vorgänge und Phänomene der Welt auf Materie und deren Gesetzmäßigkeiten und Verhältnisse zurückführt. Auf die Frage „Was gibt es?“ antwortet der Materialismus: „Nur Materie“. Der Materialismus geht also davon aus, dass auch Gedanken, Gefühle oder das Bewusstsein Erscheinungsformen der Materie sind bzw. auf solche zurückgeführt werden können. Er erklärt die den Menschen umgebende Welt und die in ihr ablaufenden Prozesse ohne geistige bzw. immaterielle Elemente, wie beispielsweise Gott oder der Seele. In der Gegenwartsphilosophie wird der Begriff „Physikalismus“ oft gleichbedeutend mit „Materialismus“ verwendet. Gegenbegriffe sind der Idealismus, für den nur Bewusstseinsinhalte eigentlich wirklich sind, und der Dualismus, für den das Physische und das Psychische zwei strikt voneinander getrennte, eigenständig existierende Seinsbereiche darstellen.
