Multilateral means "versatile". In politics, the term "multilateral" is used when several states cooperate cooperatively, in principle, equally. In multilateralism, the interests of all partners are taken into account and there are often written agreements, agreed in the form of contracts, which bind all parties involved. In the case of the General Agreement on Trade in Services, this means that countries are not allowed to enter into bilateral agreements, but only agreements which benefit all members alike. The formal multilateral diplomacy goes back to the Congress of Vienna in the nineteenth century. Since then, multilateralism has gained in importance. Nowadays, many trade agreements are multilateral, for example the WTO Agreement. Multilateral federations of states also form a common policy, for example the European Union, or environmental agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol. The United Nations is the most important multilateral institution with a global reach. Related terms are bilateral and unilateral.

Die formelle multilaterale Diplomatie geht nach der Ansicht vieler auf den Wiener Kongress im neunzehnten Jahrhundert zurück. Seitdem hat der Multilateralismus kräftig an Bedeutung gewonnen. Heutzutage sind viele Handelsabkommen multilateral, zum Beispiel das WTO-Abkommen. Auch bilden sich multilaterale Staatenverbände mit gemeinsamer Politik, zum Beispiel die Europäische Union, oder Umweltabkommen, wie das Kyoto-Protokoll. Die Vereinten Nationen sind die wichtigste multilaterale Institution mit globaler Reichweite. Verwandte Begriffe sind bilateral und unilateral.
