Plankton is the term for organisms that live in water and whose floating direction is dictated by water currents. Organisms that can also swim against currents are called nectons. As the founder of systematic plankton research, the marine biologist Johannes Peter Mueller, who began the scientific investigation of these organisms from 1846 on the island of Heligoland, He called the plankton at the time. Of great importance is the Kiel explorer, Victor Hensen, who in 1889 directed the first scientific expedition, which was concerned only with plankton.
