Unter einer Nekrose wird in der Biologie und Medizin der am lebenden Organismus stattfindende pathologische Untergang einzelner oder mehrerer Zellen verstanden. Der Begriff der Apoptose wird dagegen als physiologischer Untergang einzelner Zellen oder bestimmter Zellpopulation definiert und darum auch als programmierter Zelltod bezeichnet. Nekrosen werden nicht nur beim Menschen und bei Tieren, sondern ebenso bei Pflanzen beobachtet. Schädigende Einflüsse wie Gifte, Bakterien, Nährstoff- und Sauerstoffmangel, Radioaktivität und vieles mehr können unter Umständen zum Zelltod führen. Die Folge ist eine Entzündungsreaktion des umliegenden Gewebes. Durch die Entzündungsreaktion werden Fresszellen angelockt, die entzündliche Botenstoffe wie Tumornekrosefaktor ausschütten. Dadurch entsteht im Bereich der Nekrose auch Apoptose. Die Apoptose kann pharmakologisch blockiert werden, dies kann auch zur Therapie von Nekrosen eingesetzt werden. Je nach Gewebeart heilt die Nekrose durch Nachwachsen der Zellen komplett ab oder der nekrotische Gewebeteil wird durch eine bindegewebige Narbe ersetzt.
