Das selten vorkommende Schwermetall ist von grauer Farbe und gut schmiedbar. Niob kann aus den Erzen Columbit, Coltan und Loparit gewonnen werden. Es wird hauptsächlich in der Metallurgie verwendet, um Spezialstähle herzustellen und die Schweißbarkeit zu verbessern.
