The paleophyte is a time-historical period in which the Pteridophyta were the predominant class of land plants. The term was formed in 1941 by the geologist Kurd von Bülow in analogy to the Palaeozoic. The beginning of the palaeophytic is defined by the first occurrence of the Pteridophyta in the middle silur about 420 million years ago, and the end at the boundary from the lower to the upper body was assumed about 256 million years ago, when the Mesophytic begins. However, this limitation is problematic as the transition to the gymnosperms dominating the Mesophytic gradually took place and a sharp boundary between the paleozoic and the Mesophytic could not be defined. After the terrestrial settlement by the primal ferns at the end of the Obersilur and the Unterdevon, the development of the fern follows. In Devon, a warm season prevailed in the northern hemisphere, while it was cool in the southern hemisphere. However, traces of a possible cold time were not found. In the subsequent carbon, a mild-humid climate prevailed in the northern hemisphere, which offered good conditions for the unfolding of the ferns.

Das Paläophytikum ist ein erdgeschichtlicher Zeitabschnitt, in dem die Pteridophyta die vorherrschende Klasse der Landpflanzen bildeten. Der Begriff wurde 1941 von dem Geologen Kurd von Bülow in Analogie zu Paläozoikum gebildet. Der Beginn des Paläophytikums wird durch das erste Auftreten der Pteridophyta im mittleren Silur vor etwa 420 Millionen Jahren definiert und das Ende an der Grenze vom Unter- zum Oberperm vor etwa 256 Millionen Jahren angenommen, an der das Mesophytikum beginnt. Allerdings ist diese Grenzziehung problematisch, da sich der Übergang zu den im Mesophytikum dominierenden Gymnospermen allmählich vollzog und sich keine scharfe Grenze zwischen Paläo- und Mesophytikum definieren lässt. Nach der terrestrischen Ansiedelung durch die Urfarne am Ende des Obersilurs und im Unterdevon folgt die Entwicklung der Farne. Im Devon herrschte auf der Nordhalbkugel eine Warmzeit, während es auf der Südhalbkugel kühl war. Spuren einer möglichen Kaltzeit wurden jedoch nicht gefunden. Im anschließenden Karbon herrschte auf der Nordhemisphäre ein mild-humides Klima vor das gute Voraussetzungen für die Entfaltung der Farne bot.
