Phonograph

The phonograph is a device for the acoustic-mechanical recording and reproduction of sound. The term refers to a "speech machine" announced on November 21, 1877 by Thomas Alva Edison, 8 days later and filed by him on 24 December 1877. A patent was granted to him on 19 February 1878. A co-inventor was Charles Cros, who built a so-called "Paléophon". However, he lacked the funds to patent his invention. Moreover, Cros had little interest in the marketing of his invention; he was more interested in scientific recognition. Edison received further patents for the further development of his phonograph in 1878 in Germany and 1880 in the USA.
