On the one hand, stem or phylum denotes a hierarchical rank, ie a taxonomic unit, near the root of the system, the exact classification differs depending on the subject. On the other hand, different strains of lines within a kind of bacteria, archaea, and also in viruses are referred to as strains. In the latter case it is not a taxonomic rank. Andererseits werden verschiedene Abstammungslinien innerhalb einer Art von Bakterien, Archaeen und auch bei Viren als Stämme bezeichnet. in letzterem Fall handelt es sich nicht um eine taxonomische Rangstufe.
