Privatdozent

A lecturer at a university or another university is the name for a habilitated scientist with a teaching qualification who does not hold a regular professorship. Private lecturers are self-employed as university lecturers and are solely responsible for academic teaching. It belongs to the academic superstructure. In many countries they are obliged to a minimum number of teaching events, otherwise they lose their name. The term "Privatdozent" does not represent a title or an academic degree, but a functional description. The designation also does not constitute an official or service relationship. In Austria, universities awarded the university professor the title of university lecturer until 2003, which led to confusion with the group of officials of the same name. It was only in 2004 that the title "Privatdozent" was introduced in Austria, so that the teaching authority was distinguished from the official position conceptually.

Privatdozent ist an einer Universität oder einer sonstigen Hochschule die Bezeichnung für einen habilitierten Wissenschaftler mit Lehrberechtigung, der keine reguläre Professorenstelle innehat. Privatdozenten sind als Hochschullehrer selbständig und alleinverantwortlich zur akademischen Lehre berechtigt. Er gehört dem akademischen Oberbau an. In vielen Ländern sind sie zu einer Mindestzahl von Lehrveranstaltungen verpflichtet, andernfalls verlieren sie die Bezeichnung. Die Bezeichnung Privatdozent stellt weder einen Titel noch einen akademischen Grad, sondern eine Funktionsbezeichnung dar. Es wird durch die Bezeichnung auch kein Amts- bzw. Dienstverhältnis begründet. In Österreich verliehen Universitäten bis 2003 mit der Habilitation die Lehrbefugnis als Universitätsdozent, was immer wieder zu Verwechslungen mit der gleichnamigen Verwendungsgruppe für Beamte führte. Erst 2004 wurde die Bezeichnung Privatdozent auch in Österreich eingeführt, damit wurde die Lehrbefugnis von der Beamtenstellung auch begrifflich unterschieden.
