A radiometer is a detector for measuring the irradiance. However, the term radiometer is used not only for a functional principle. The lightmill, invented by William Crookes, a rotating impeller wheel, does not measure the mechanical radiation pressure of the light, but is driven by thermal molecular motion. The interior of the glass flask, in which the impeller rotates, is largely evacuated to a residual gas pressure of one to ten pascals. The gas molecules are heated on the dark surface of the impeller and transfer a portion of their impulse to the wheel, which consequently rotates. This effect is referred to in the literature as a "radiometric effect". In contrast, a similar, approximately simultaneously created, but much more sensitive construction of Ernest Fox Nichols actually measures directly the mechanical radiation pressure of light. This is also true of an experiment developed by Pyotr Nikolaevich Lebedev at this time.

Ein Radiometer ist ein Detektor zur Messung der Bestrahlungsstärke. Der Begriff Radiometer wird jedoch nicht nur für ein Funktionsprinzip verwendet. Die von William Crookes erfundene Lichtmühle – ein sich bei Beleuchtung drehendes Flügelrad – misst nicht den mechanischen Strahlungsdruck des Lichtes, sondern wird durch thermische Molekularbewegung angetrieben. Das Innere des Glaskolbens, in dem sich das Flügelrad dreht, ist weitgehend evakuiert bis auf einen Restgasdruck von ein bis zehn Pascal. Die Gasmoleküle werden an der dunklen Oberfläche des Flügelrades erwärmt und übertragen einen Teil ihres Impulses auf das Rad, das sich infolgedessen in Drehung versetzt. Dieser Effekt wird in der Fachliteratur als „Radiometereffekt“ bezeichnet. Im Gegensatz dazu misst ein ähnlicher, ungefähr gleichzeitig entstandener, jedoch weitaus sensitiverer Aufbau von Ernest Fox Nichols tatsächlich direkt den mechanischen Strahlungsdruck von Licht. Das gilt ebenso für ein um diese Zeit entwickeltes Experiment von Pjotr Nikolajewitsch Lebedev.
