turgor

Turgor

The pressure of the cell shaft on the cell wall is referred to as Turgor in plant physiology and cell biology. If the osmotic value in the cell is higher than in the surrounding apoplast, it absorbs water by deplasolysis. The pressure in its interior tensions the surrounding cell wall. The turgor is caught by the elastic wall pressure, which counteracts it. If the turgor has its greatest value, it is said to be full of turgescence. If, on the other hand, the osmotic value of the surrounding environment is greater than in the cell-juice, the turgor decreases and the protoplast dissolves from the cell wall. On the interplay of turgor and wall pressure the strength of herbaceous, non-lignified plants is based.
