Vajrayana (Sanskrit वज्रयान vajrayāna, wylie: rdo rje theg pa ("Dorje Thegpa"), also: Lamaism (lamajiao), diamond vehicle, wadjjana, Mantrayana ("mantra vehicle") or Tantraana) The 4th century in India, the current of Mahayana Buddhism, which particularly characterized the Buddhist traditions of the Tibetan uplands, Buddhism in Tibet itself, and Buddhism in Mongolia. To a lesser extent, the Vajrayana also spread in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. Vajrayana (Sanskrit वज्रयान vajrayāna , wylie: rdo rje theg pa („Dorje Thegpa“); auch: Lamaismus (lamajiao), Diamantfahrzeug, Wadschrajana, Mantrayana („Mantrafahrzeug“), Tantrayāna („Tantrafahrzeug“) oder esoterischer Buddhismus) ist eine ab dem 4. Jahrhundert in Indien entstandene Strömung des Mahayana-Buddhismus, die insbesondere die buddhistischen Traditionen des Hochlands von Tibet, den Buddhismus in Tibet an sich sowie den Buddhismus in der Mongolei prägte. In geringerem Maße fand der Vajrayana auch Verbreitung im chinesischen und im japanischen Buddhismus.
