Vomitorium

The "vomitorium" is an access to the seats in Roman theaters, amphitheaters and Circi because the observer on the stage or the arena has the impression that the spectators who are coming in will be ejected from the vomitorium. According to a common legend, there should have been a break-room in the villas of rich Romans in the ancient world, which was also called Vomitorium. This was said to be used in large eating establishments, by deliberate vomiting the stomach again to empty, so that one could continue. Such rooms, however, can not be proved by archaeological discoveries; the Romans sought the Latrina to vomit. Vomitorium is also the Latin-born foreign word for refractories, next to the Greek-born emetic.
