WHAT DOES ATOMIC WEIGHT MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Relative atomic mass

Relative atomic mass is a dimensionless physical quantity, the ratio of the average mass of atoms of an element to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12. The term is equivalent to atomic weight, which is the older term, and which is also sample specific. Thus, two samples of a chemical element which is naturally found as being composed of more than one isotope, collected from two substantially different sources, are expected to have slightly different relative atomic masses, because isotopic concentrations typically vary slightly with the history of the source. Both the terms relative atomic mass and atomic weight are sometimes loosely used to refer to a technically different standardized expectation value, called the standard atomic weight. This value is the mean value of atomic weights of a number of "normal samples" of the element in question. For this definition, " normal sample is any reasonably possible source of the element or its compounds in commerce for industry and science and has not been subject to significant modification of isotopic composition within a geologically brief period.

4 QUOTES WITH «ATOMIC WEIGHT»

Famous quotes and sentences with the word atomic weight.
1
Francis William Aston
It has long been known that the chemical atomic weight of hydrogen was greater than one-quarter of that of helium, but so long as fractional weights were general there was no particular need to explain this fact, nor could any definite conclusions be drawn from it.
2
Dmitri Mendeleev
The magnitude of the atomic weight determines the character of the element, just as the magnitude of the molecule determines the character of a compound body.
3
Dmitri Mendeleev
We must expect the discovery of many as yet unknown elements-for example, elements analogous to aluminum and silicon- whose atomic weight would be between 65 and 75.
