Honeysuckles are arching shrubs or twining vines in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 180 species of honeysuckle, 100 of which occur in China while about 20 native species occur in Europe, India and, North America each. Widely known species include Lonicera periclymenum, Lonicera japonica and Lonicera sempervirens. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers on some of these plants, especially L. sempervirens and L. ciliosa. The name Lonicera stems from Adam Lonicer, a Renaissance botanist.

Definition of honeysuckle in the English dictionary

The first definition of honeysuckle in the dictionary is any temperate caprifoliaceous shrub or vine of the genus Lonicera: cultivated for their fragrant white, yellow, or pink tubular flowers. Other definition of honeysuckle is any of several similar plants. Honeysuckle is also any of various Australian trees or shrubs of the genus Banksia, having flowers in dense spikes: family Proteaceae.
