WHAT DOES PEARSON'S CORRELATION COEFFICIENT MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient

In statistics, the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is a measure of the linear correlation between two variables X and Y, giving a value between +1 and −1 inclusive, where 1 is total positive correlation, 0 is no correlation, and −1 is total negative correlation. It is widely used in the sciences as a measure of the degree of linear dependence between two variables. It was developed by Karl Pearson from a related idea introduced by Francis Galton in the 1880s. Examples of scatter diagrams with different values of correlation coefficient Several sets of points, with the correlation coefficient of x and y for each set. Note that the correlation reflects the non-linearity and direction of a linear relationship, but not the slope of that relationship, nor many aspects of nonlinear relationships. N.B.: the figure in the center has a slope of 0 but in that case the correlation coefficient is undefined because the variance of Y is zero.

Definition of Pearson's correlation coefficient in the English dictionary

The definition of Pearson's correlation coefficient in the dictionary is a statistic measuring the linear relationship between two variables in a sample and used as an estimate of the correlation in the whole population, given by r = Cov /√ In full: Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient.
