WHAT DOES PHIDIPPIDES MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Phidippides

Pheidippides

Pheidippides, hero of Ancient Greece, is the central figure in a story that was the inspiration for a modern sporting event, the marathon. He is said to have run from Marathon to Athens in under 36 hours to deliver news of a military victory against the Persians. This is most likely a myth, rather than a true historical event, due to the fact that domesticated horses were common in ancient Greece. If a message needed to be delivered quickly, the messenger surely would have ridden a horse.
