Proscription

Proscription is the public identification and official condemnation of enemies of the state. The term originates from Ancient Rome, but has been used to describe similar phenomena in other times and places. Proscription implies the elimination en masse of political rivals or personal enemies. Proscription was involved, e.g., during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution and in the political violence in Argentina against Peronists after Perón fled into exile. Proscription is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a "decree of condemnation to death or banishment" and is a heavily politically charged word, frequently used to refer to state-approved murder or persecution.

Definition of proscription in the English dictionary

The first definition of proscription in the dictionary is the act of proscribing or the state of being proscribed. Other definition of proscription is denunciation, prohibition, or exclusion. Proscription is also outlawry or ostracism.
