shofar

Shofar

A shofar (Hebrew: שׁוֹפָר (help·info)) is a musical instrument of ancient origin, made of a horn, traditionally that of a ram, used for Jewish religious purposes. Like the modern bugle, the shofar lacks pitch-altering devices. All pitch control is done by varying the player's embouchure. Shofar-blowing is incorporated in synagogue services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Shofars come in a variety of sizes.

Definition of shofar in the English dictionary

The definition of shofar in the dictionary is a ram's horn sounded in the synagogue daily during the month of Elul and repeatedly on Rosh Hashanah, and by the ancient Israelites as a warning, summons, etc.
