WHAT DOES STEREOPSIS MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Stereopsis

Stereopsis is the process yielding depth and distance of seen objects from having two eyes and normal binocular vision. Because the eyes of humans, and many animals, are located at different lateral positions on the head, binocular vision allows for two slightly different images to be projected in each eye that provide a means of depth perception. These differences are mainly in the relative horizontal positions of objects, so-called horizontal disparity or, more generally, binocular disparity. Humans and other animals integrate depth information from binocular vision with information visible from each eye alone, such as object size and motion parallax, to determine depth in the visual scene. Stereopsis in the human brain takes place in the caudal portion of the intraparietal sulcus. Stereopsis is not possible when viewing a scene with one eye or if binocular vision is abnormal, such as from strabismus. Nevertheless, humans and other animals can process depths and distances from other sources of information, from so-called monocular depth cues.
