WHAT DOES TENNIS ELBOW MEAN IN ENGLISH?

tennis elbow

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is a condition in which the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender. It is commonly caused by non-inflammatory, chronic degenerative changes in the tendon that attaches the forearm muscle extensor carpi radialis brevis to the elbow. It is most prevalent in middle age and in men than women. The disease is idiopathic, benign, and self-limiting. Most of the names for this disease are misnomers: tennis elbow is a misnomer because most people who get this disease do not play tennis and lateral epicondylitis is a misnomer because the condition does not involve inflammation. Some physicians refer to the condition as epicondylosis. Runge is usually credited for the first description of the condition, in 1873. The term tennis elbow first appeared in an 1883 paper by Major called Lawn-tennis elbow.
