WHAT DOES TERRITORY OF PAPUA MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Territory of Papua

Territory of Papua

The Territory of Papua comprised the southeastern quarter of the island of New Guinea from 1883 to 1949. It became a British Protectorate in the year 1884, and four years later it was formally annexed as British New Guinea. In 1906 it was devolved to Australian jurisdiction, and in 1949 it was dissolved as a political entity when it was amalgamated with its northern neighbour the Territory of New Guinea to form the Australian-administered Territory of Papua and New Guinea. In 1975 the combined territories were granted full independence by Australia under the name of Papua New Guinea. The Territory of Papua made up roughly half of the current nation and contained the territory's capital, Port Moresby which then became the capital of the nation.
