Coordinates: 54°59′15″N 1°27′30″W / 54.98750°N 1.45833°W / 54.98750; -1.45833 Tyneside is a conurbation in North East England, defined by the Office for National Statistics, which is home to over 80% of the population of Tyne and Wear. It is historically part of the ceremonial counties of Northumberland and County Durham. It includes the city of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Metropolitan Boroughs of Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside — all settlements on the banks of the River Tyne. The population of the conurbation was 774,891 according to the returned census of 2011. According to data from 2013 ONS population estimates; the Tyne Population, including the four unitary authorities of South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle was 832,469. Tyneside is the 7th largest conurbation in England. The only large settlement in Tyne and Wear that is not part of the Tyneside conurbation is Sunderland, which is on Wearside.
