Dhow

Dhow

The dhow is a sailing vessel of Arab origin characterized by its triangular canopy and low draft, being the most common that they have a single mast, although they can carry two or three. The most revolutionary aspect of the dhow in naval history was its triangular canopy, which allowed it to sail without paddles independently of the direction of the wind, unlike the boats with rectangular sails existing until then, that needed to have wind in stern to dispense Of the rowers. It is not known precisely when they appeared, however everything seems to indicate that their appearance is linked to that of Islam; In fact, because of its marine qualities and low construction cost, it was the instrument that enabled the Arabs to propagate their new faith throughout most of the Indian Ocean basin, from the North of Mozambique to Indonesia, through Pakistan, parts of the India, Burma and Thailand, Malaysia and even the southern Philippines, especially Mindanao. The dhow was mainly used as cargo ship, this being of varied types, from grain and fish to slaves and minerals.
