Division
The division is a mathematical operation that has two numbers a and b associates a third number, called quotient or ratio, and which can be written: ▪ a: b; ▪ a ÷ b; ▪ a / b; ▪. In a first approach, the quantity a ÷ b can be seen as a separation of the quantity a in b equal parts. But this approach is especially suited to the division between whole numbers, where the notion of quantity is quite intuitive. The "exact" division of the "with remainder" division is commonly distinguished. From a practical point of view, division can be seen as the product of the first by the inverse of the second. If a number is non-zero, the function "division by this number" is the reciprocal of the function "multiplication by this number". This allows a number of properties of the operation to be determined. More generally, the quotient y = a / b can be defined as the solution of the equation b × y = a.
