Gite (navigation)
A vessel is, under normal operating conditions, in a stable and straight equilibrium position. By temporary necessity, it may be necessary to give it a transverse inclination of a few degrees, it will be a shelter. The transverse inclination of a ship is called a lodge or strip. ▪ The band is defined more generally as the transverse inclination of a ship caused by an external phenomenon. A sailboat will frequently give the band, but a cargo ship may also give it because of its dunnage. The term gave its name to the correcting magnet hanging under the bowl of the ship's magnetic compass. This magnet corrects the part of the magnetic deviation due to the prolonged permanent inclination of the sailboats. ▪ Heel is the more general term defining the transverse tilt caused by an inner phenomenon. Terminology: A ship is said to be "5 ° heel" to port or to starboard, or a ship "to give band".
