grecquage
Grecquage is one of the steps in the binding process. It consists of notching on the back of the volume with a hand saw. These notches will receive the nerves which will no longer be protruding from the back of the notebooks. After having tossed the volume by the back and the head, in order to equalize the notebooks, the bookbinder places it between two chords, which are thicker on one side than the other, in such a way that the volume comes from 6 to 8 millimeters; he places it in the press and tightens it very lightly. As the chords are thicker on the back side than on the side of the waist, they tighten the back more and keep the volume more secure. Then he makes with the saw the necessary cuts of a depth equal to the diameter of the nerves. Above the first Greek, and beneath the latter, it gives a slight blow of a saw to lodge the chain. In the industrial gluing process, the gluing is automated.
