Histiocyte

The histiocyte, or spongiocyte, is a large cell that is part of the immune system. It is a macrophage of the connective tissue that derives from the bone marrow. Initially, immature monocytes pass through the marrow / blood barrier. After a short stay in the blood, they cross the endothelial barrier to migrate into an organ. There, they differentiate into histiocytes which will enter into the constitution of the reticulo-histiocytic system. The histiocytic cell is mobile, capable of phagocytosis and has an elasticity property. Once it has phagocyted, it becomes a macrophage. If the latter is incapable of performing its function, there are what are called epithelioid cells, which are another type of histiocytic cells, which will then be responsible for degrading foreign bodies. In optical microscopy vesicles can be seen around its nucleus. In electron microscopy it can be seen that these vesicles are in fact lysosomes. There is also a rather developed Golgi apparatus.
