Sempervirent or semperflorens or familiarly "evergreen" means that always remains green or always flowered. This term corresponds to the adjective "persistent" in common language. In botany, it refers to a plant that keeps its leaves throughout the year, as opposed to deciduous trees. Leaf persistence in plants can range from just one year to a maximum of 45 years in Bristlecone pine. However, very few species have persistence beyond 5 years. Another exceptional case exists in Welwitschia, an African gymnosperm, which produces only two leaves which grow continuously during the life of the plant but which disappear at the apex, giving them between 20 and 40 years of persistence of the foliar tissues . We also talk about evergreen forest when, at any time of the year, the majority of trees are leafy. It may contain evergreen trees, but also deciduous trees, which are not necessarily deciduous at the same time.
