Stigma is a serious social disagreement of personal characteristics or beliefs that are perceived to be contrary to cultural norms. According to Erving Goffman, the stigmatization of an individual intervenes when he presents a relative variant in relation to the models offered by his close environment. There are three forms of stigma recognized by Goffman. The first is the presence of external distortions, such as scarring and physical manifestations of anorexia nervosa, leprosy, physical disability or social disability, such as obesity.
