Otranto 【Otranto】 Port town in southern Italy, province of Puglia. Facing the Otranto Strait of the Adriatic Sea, it is located on the easternmost tip of the Italian Peninsula. The colonial city of ancient Greece was placed, and in ancient Roman times it was called Hydrudum. It prospered as a base of trade from the 11th century to the 15th century. From 1480 to the following year, it became the stage of the "Otranto's Battle" which was held between the Ottoman Empire and the Naples Kingdom. Historical buildings such as the Otranto Cathedral of the 11th century and the St. Peter's Church with Byzantine style frescoes are left in the Old Town.
