Located in the gau, about 50 kilometers northeast of the capital Reykjavik. In 930, immigrants from Norway were known as a place where the world's first democratic assembly (Albing) opened, and in 1930 established as a sanctuary of democratic politics in the country national park. It was registered as a World Heritage (cultural heritage) in 2004.
