[補説]1980年から2004年までは「トヨタヨーロッパ／サウスアメリカカップ」の名称で、日本で開催され、欧州と南米の各クラブ選手権大会で優勝したチームが対戦した。前身のインターコンチネンタルカップは1960年に始まり、南米と欧州で開催されていたが、サポーター同士の衝突が激化したことなどから、第三国の日本で開催されることになった経緯がある。2005年以降は、国際サッカー連盟（FIFA）が主催する同様の大会と統合。アジア・アフリカ・北中米カリブ海・オセアニアを加えた6地域の各大陸選手権大会で優勝したクラブがトーナメント方式で対戦し、世界王者を決める。2007年から開催国の国内優勝クラブにも出場権が与えられた。開催国はFIFAの理事会が決定する。2005～2008年および2011・2012年は日本で開催。トヨタ自動車が引き続き冠スポンサーを務め、大会名称は「TOYOTAプレゼンツFIFAクラブワールドカップ」。
