Gilo
Gilo is a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem. This area has about 40,000 inhabitants. The international community says Gilo is an illegal settlement of Israel, but Israel denies it. The new Gilo was founded in 1973, but archaeological excavations indicate that the site has been inhabited since the Age of Iron Age I, the Roman Age, Byzantium and until now. Until 1917 the territory was from the Ottoman Empire and after that became the area of the British Mandate Palestinian. In 1948, this land became Jordan. After the Six Days' War in 1967, Israel captured the territory and was deployed to Jerusalem. Gilo is home to the former Arabian village of Beit Safafa and the city of Beit Jala in the West Bank.
