A method of forming the upper part of a building into a semicircle is called an arch. The shape changes somewhat according to the times. In Ghana and Gothic times, peak arches were used and were often used in Rome, Byzantine, and Gothic. The arc of the arch is called arcade. The arch is a curved structure that secures the opening and supports a considerable load with compressive stress. Arch was first used in Indus civilization around 2500 BCE and was later used in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Assyria and Etruscan, and was further refined in ancient Rome. Arch has become an important technology in the construction of the cathedral, and is still used in structures such as bridges. The arch is a structure that prevents tensile stress from acting. All loads act as compressive stresses. It is strong against compressive forces such as rock, cast iron, and concrete, but it is advantageous for weak materials for tensile, shearing and twisting.

건축물의 상부를 반원형으로 형성하는 방법을 아치라고 한다. 모양을 시대에 따라 다소 바뀌어가나 고딕시대에는 첨두 아치가 사용되고 로마, 비잔틴, 고딕에 곧잘 사용되었다. 아치의 주랑을 아케이드라 한다. 아치는 개구부를 확보하며 상당한 하중을 압축 응력으로 지지할 수 있도록 만든 곡선 형태의 구조물이다. 아치는 기원전 2500년 경 인더스 문명에서 최초로 사용되었고 그 후 메소포타미아, 이집트, 아시리아, 에트루리아에서도 사용되었으며, 고대 로마에서 더욱 다듬어졌다. 아치는 성당 건설에서 중요한 기술이 되었으며, 현재도 교량 등의 구조물에 사용되고 있다. 아치는 인장 응력이 작용하지 않도록 한 구조물이다. 모든 하중은 압축 응력으로 작용하게 된다. 이는 암석이나 주철, 콘크리트 등 압축에 강하지만 인장, 전단, 비틀림에는 약한 재료에 대해 유리하다.
