The Alans or Alans are Iranian nomadic people originating from steppe areas in the northeast of the Black Sea. It was first introduced in the ancient Roman literature before and after the time of the Genesis, and it was said that it was a tall blond people, who originated from the Caucasus on the Caspian coast and advanced westward. 알라니족 또는 알란족은 흑해 연안 북동쪽의 스텝지역에서 기원한 이란계 유목민족이다. 기원전후 고대 로마의 문헌에 처음 등장하는데 이들은 카스피해 연안의 카프카스에서 기원하여 서쪽으로 진출하였다고 하며 금발에 키가 큰 민족이었다고 전한다. 3세기와 4세기 게르만 민족의 대이동 시기에 알라니족도 다른 유목민족과 마찬가지로 훈족의 영향으로 로마 제국의 영토를 침범하였다. 이들은 반달족, 수에비족과 함께 이동하여 갈리아로 들어왔고 거기서 다시 피레네 산맥을 넘어 히스파니아로 내려갔다. 히스파니아에서는 서고트족과 경쟁하여 패하였고 반달족의 군데리크 왕의 치세에 반달족에 흡수 되었다가 반달족이 북아프리카로 이주 할 때 대부분 함께 이주하였다. 르네 그루쎄에 따르면, 카탈로니아라는 명칭은 고트와 알란을 합성한 것이다. 한편 흑해에서 북서쪽으로 이동한 일부의 알라니족은 현재의 폴란드 지방에서 슬라브족과 동화되었다.
