Belmopan
Belmopan is the capital of Belize in Central America. The population is about 16,000. Located on the east side of the Belize River, the old capital is 80 km inland from Belize City. It belongs to Cayo Ward in administrative area. Belize City, which was the old capital of Belize, was frequently hit by hurricanes due to its location on the Caribbean coast. In particular, it was destroyed by a hurricane that hit Belize in 1961 and moved the capital from Belize City to the inland area in 1970. In preparation for independence as a new plan city, the name of the British Dominion was changed from Belize to the capital of the former capital, Honduras, and completely independent from Britain in 1981.
