보수주의는 관습적인 전통 가치를 옹호하고, 기존 사회 체제의 유지와 안정적인 발전을 추구하는 정치이념을 말한다. 상대적으로 급격한 사회 변혁을 추구하는 진보주의와 반대되는 개념으로, 가치로서의 보수는 현상 유지를 하거나, 점진적이고 안정적인 발전을 추구하는 등 다양한 의미를 지니고 있다. 보수주의는 보수적 가치를 추구하는 수많은 방법 중의 하나일 뿐이다. 그래서 여타 다른 보수적 가치를 추구하는 방식들, 과거로의 회귀를 추구하는 반동주의와 현상을 유지하려는 수구파와는 구별이 필요하다. 보수주의는 시대와 문화에 따라서 상대적인 의미를 갖는다. 서양의 경우 산업혁명 이후 현대 사회에서는 자본주의의 모순에 반발하는 사회주의는 진보로 분류할 수 있는 반면, 경제영역에서의 온건적 자유화는 보수에 가깝다. 보수로 분류할 수 있는 여러 사상이나 정치 집단이 있으며, 그 스펙트럼도 다양하다.
