Bottrop is a city in western Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia. Population 117,241. It is located in the Ruhr area and is in contact with Essen Oberhausen. Originally a small town, it grew rapidly with the industrial development of the Rur of the 19th century and became a city. It has developed into coal mining and related industries. It was also important as a railway crossing, and after the Second World War, the Autobahn crossed. It is located on the main canal of the region, the Rheinherne canal, and is also a key to water transport.
