Chen Shui-bian was the 10th and 11th president of the Republic of China, the first president in the history of the Republic of China. It is also called as a nickname. Chen's election meant that the ruling party's long-term power had ended and peaceful regime change had taken place. It is one of the representative politicians of the Republic of China, claiming 'independence of Taiwan', and thus confronted with the People's Republic of China and the flood-like politicians. He was elected as the first non-Kuomintang party president, with 39% of the vote, out of the independent candidate and Lianzan of the Nationalist Party in the March 18, 2000 election. In the first few weeks, Chen Shui - bian received high support, but his approval rating dropped sharply due to corruption in the administration of the state and failure of the National Assembly to pass legislation against the opposition. In 2004, he was shot on March 19 while campaigning for a re - election campaign.
