다형선종 전에는 이하선혼합종양이라고 했다. 종양성은 상피성 부분에만 있고, 간엽성부분에 종양성이 없는 것을 알게 되었고 이하선(耳下腺)보다 악하선(顎下腺), 설하선(舌下腺), 타액선에서 발생하는 것이 많다. 오늘날에는 다형성선종이라고 하나 아직 이하선혼합종양의 명칭을 사용하는 사람도 있다. 상피성종양세포는 타액선세포와 유사하고, 선포형성(腺胞形成)도 볼 수 있다. 양성종양이기 때문에, 종양만을 절제하면 되나 이하선에 발생한 경우에는 수술시에 안면신경을 마비시키지 않도록 주의해야 한다.
