공산당은 공산주의를 목표로 하며, 마르크스-레닌주의 또는 유럽공산주의를 이념으로 하는 정당이다. 공산당은 농민과 생산 노동자를 기반으로 한 정당이며, 몇몇 정당은 모택동주의, 트로츠키주의를 이념으로 내걸고있다. 적어도 공산당이 마르크스-레닌주의를 표방하고 있지 않다고 해도 마르크스주의 철학적 강령을 가지고 있거나 평등지상주의를 옹호한다는 것은 공통점이다. 세계 최초의 공산혁명인 러시아 혁명이 민중들의 주도로 성공하고 코민테른이 설립된 이후 전 세계적으로 급속히 확산되었다. 현재는 4개국이 일당제로 운용하고 있으며, 일부 국가에서는 민주적인 선거를 통해 집권하는 공산당도 있다. 유럽에서는 유럽공산주의의 황혼기를 맞으며, 1980년대 후반부터 급격히 세력이 약화되었다. 1991년 소련의 붕괴로 인해 많은 일당제 공산주의 국가들이 붕괴하므로, 공산당은 정계에서 큰 힘을 발휘하지 못하게 되었다.
