Hassalou
HaSalou is a coastal city on the western coast of Estonia. It is the capital city of the province of Lane and covers an area of 10.59㎢, with a population of 11,618 and a population density of 1,100 people per square kilometer. It is a recreational city famous for its mud, with its clear scenery, beautiful coastline and disease treatments, and is also known as "Venice of the Baltic Sea". In 1279 it became the center of the bishop of Saare-Ranae and later the Hassalu Castle was built. The mud in the sea has long been known to be effective in the treatment of diseases, but in 1825 a military surgeon of the Russian Empire reported to the nobles of St. Petersburg that it became widely known as a summer resort for the treatment of diseases among people all over the world. Most of the Swedish population left Estonia in 1944, although it occupied a large part of the city's population since the 13th century.
