Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea is the continent of the Atlantic Ocean, and most of the sea is surrounded by three major continents. The north faces Europe, the south Africa and the east Asia. The name of the Mediterranean Sea literally means "in the middle of the ground." The area of the sea area is 2.5 million km². The point where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean are connected is only 14 km wide. The average depth of the Mediterranean is 1,500 meters. The deepest point is the Calypso abyss of the Ionian Sea, which is 5,267 meters deep. In oceanography, it is sometimes referred to as "Euro-Mediterranean Sea" or "European Mediterranean Sea" to distinguish this sea from the Mediterranean Sea, a general concept of land-bound ocean. Since ancient times, the Mediterranean has been an important trade route, with commodities and diverse cultures being exchanged among the ethnic groups of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Phenicia, Cartago, Greece, Levant, Rome, Moors and Turks. It is important to know the history of the Mediterranean in order to understand the origin and development of modern societies.
