Lüneburg
Lüneburg is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany. The population is 72,983. It is located on the shores of the Ilmenau River, a tributary of the Elbe River, 40 km southeast of Hamburg. It was mentioned in the records of the 10th century, and it developed into the Hanja Confederation city in the Middle Ages. It was merged into Hannover in the 18th century, in 1866 in Hanover province of Prussia, and became the city of Lower Saxony after World War II. Old buildings such as city hall, cathedral, castle are well preserved, and port of Chinese character age remains. In 1946 the university was founded. To the south is the wasteland of Lüneburger Heide, named after the city.
