Wood vinegar
목초액
Wood vinegar is a clear stream of lignocellulosic material made from wood. When burning charcoal, a lot of wood vinegar is produced as a by-product. Appearance is a chocolate-colored liquid ranging from dark brown to yellowish brown. Other components include aromatic compounds such as alcohols, carbonyl groups, phenols, and furans. Ingredients are uneven depending on raw materials and conditions of carbonization. Also called Mt. Methanol, otherwise called woodland, is derived from what was obtained by distilling past wood vinegar. 목초액은 목재를 건류할 때 만들어지는 맑은 건류액 성분이다. 숯을 구울 때 그 부산물로 목초액이 많이 생산된다. 외양은 초콜릿색에서 암갈색에 이르는 액체로, 그 성분은 대부분 수분이지만 목재성 유기산이 포함되어 약산성을 나타낸다. 그 이외 성분으로 알코올, 카르보닐기, 페놀류, 퓨란류 등 방향성 화합물이 포함된다. 원자재나 건류 조건에 따라 성분은 고르지 않다. 목초산이라고도 한다. 메탄올을 달리 목정이라고 불렀던 것은, 과거 목초액을 증류해서 얻어졌던 것에서 연유한다.

목재를 건류하여 얻은 액체를 방치하여 두면 두 층으로 나누어지는데, 이 중에서의 상층부를 가리킨다. 하층부는 목(木)타르이다. 수량(收量)은 건재(乾材)에서 30% 이상이다. 다량의 아세트산을 함유하며, 이 밖에 메탄올·폼산 등 저급 지방산과 수많은 유기화합물이 함유되어 있다.
