Mokpo
Mokpo City is a city located at the southern tip of the Muan Peninsula in southwestern South Jeolla Province. It is located at the mouth of the Youngsan River. The eastern and southern parts are connected to Yeongam-gun, facing the Yeongsan River. The northern part is connected to Muan County and the west part to the Yellow Sea. It has an area of 50.12㎢, a population of about 240,000, and a population density of 4,928 people per square kilometer. The city hall is located in Yongdang 1-dong, and there are 23 administrative districts. Famous sites include Samjakdo, Yudal mountain, and Gap Rock. During the Japanese colonial rule, the city was formed around Mokpo Harbor. Since its opening in 1897, it has been responsible for taking over grain from the mainland of the Japanese Empire. Mokpo Port, which functioned as the three main rivers of the Republic of Korea until the 1940s, had been unable to enjoy sustained growth since the government of the Republic of Korea was largely alienated from the national development plan with the decline of Japanese imperialism.
