Novi Sad
Novi Sad is a town in the Vojvodina or autonomous province of northern Serbia. Population 400,000. It is the capital city of Vojvodina and the autonomous province, the largest city in Serbia after Belgrade. It faces the Donau River basin, 30 km north of Belgrade. It was built in the 17th century and was a fishing village on the coast, but it developed on military frontiers at the border of the Ottoman Turks and Austria. Serbs from the 19th century Ottoman Turks settled here over the Danube and became a Serbian center in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was called Noizzat in German. It is an industrial city where various industries are made, and it is an important city on the Danube river coast. It is a key point of transportation between the Balkans and Central Europe. 75% of the residents are Serbs, 5% are Hungarians, and there are many other minorities.
