Stroke is a term for symptoms, and when it is referred to as a medical illness, it is called cerebrovascular accident (CVA). In the United States, it is called the cerebrovascular stroke. It is often called paralysis, borrowing oriental medicine, but the word paralysis is a broader expression. Stroke is largely classified as cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. The brain occupies only 2% of body weight by weight, but the blood flow to the brain is 15% of the cardiac output, and the oxygen consumption is 20% of the total body oxygen consumption. In addition, since the brain uses only glucose as an energy source, necrosis easily occurs even if the energy supply is interrupted for a while. Thus, cerebral blood flow abnormalities are closely related to brain damage.

뇌졸중(腦卒中, stroke, apoplexy), 문화어: 뇌졸증, 腦卒症)은 뇌혈류 이상으로 인해 갑작스레 유발된 국소적인 신경학적 결손 증상을 통칭하는 말이다. 뇌졸중은 증상에 대한 용어로서, 의학적인 질병으로 칭할 때에는 뇌혈관 질환(腦血管疾患, cerebrovascular accident, 줄여서 CVA)이라고 한다. 미국에서는 cerebrovascular stroke이라고 한다. 한의학적인 표현을 빌려, 흔히 중풍(中風)이라고 부르기도 하지만, 중풍이라는 말은 좀 더 광의의 표현이다. 뇌졸중은 크게 뇌경색과 뇌출혈로 분류된다. 뇌는 몸 전체에서 무게로는 체중의 2%만 차지하지만, 뇌로 가는 혈류량은 심박출량의 15%나 되고, 산소 소모량은 몸 전체 산소 소모량의 20%나 된다. 게다가 뇌는 에너지원으로 포도당만을 사용하므로 에너지 공급이 잠시만 중단되어도 쉽게 괴사가 일어난다. 따라서 뇌혈류의 이상은 뇌손상과 밀접한 관련이 있다.
