Knoxville
Knoxville is a city in southern Tennessee. Population 173,890. It is located on the western shores of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains, eastern Tennessee. It is a historic city in Tennessee and was built in the late 18th century. In 1796, when Tennessee became the official state of the United States, the city was the capital. After that, the provincial authorities decided to take the city and Nashville, and Nashville to take the lead. At the time of the Civil War, it was a battlefield. In the twentieth century, the city grew into the center of the Tennessee River basin development plan. The Tennessee River Basin Development Corporation in charge of development was established in 1933 and its headquarters is here. Several dams were built on the banks of the Tennessee River and grew into an industrial city with many hydropower plants. It is currently the center of the eastern Tennessee state and is the third city in Tennessee to follow Memphis and Nashville. The University of Tennessee, Tennessee's premier public university, is also the center of education and scholarship.
